In Silvas defense ill reiterate why put 100% effort into something that you can do as efficiently with only 40% effort. Silva isnt the type of fighter who enters the ring to demolish and embarrass his opponents*. He only goes into the match to prove he has a better skill set and versatile. That was one of the weirdest fights i have ever seen, seems like it was a mixture of over confidence and lack of preperation for Silva. He seemed to clown Maia for the first two rounds but seemed very uncomfortable and tired in the last 2 rounds. He needs a challenge, he should abandon the MW belt and take super fights for the rest of his career. A.S vs GSP, or a ton of high profile fights at lhw or hw. This foolishness has to stop though

Silva is a champion, he doesn't have to take risks to win the fight. Demian was the challenger so he should have took the risks and try to get him.

Maia shouldn't have even stepped in the octagon with Silva, putting the worst striker in the class with arguably the best striker in MMA was a bad idea by White. Since there is no ranking system in the UFC i think someone like Marquart should have taken the place of Belfort since Sonnon wasn't able to, in all honesty anyone but maia would have been a little less predictible.

It was supposed to be Vitor Belfort but he got Injured then Chael sonnen but he was not cleared to fight with a cut he got in the Marquart fight . Firstly- you wold have to be a total noob not to predict this outcome. Dana is solely to blame because, on paper, you might aswell have put Thales Lietes back in there. I haven't seen the fight because of the DEAD LINK! but from the comments it was exactly as expected (although i saw a small clip of Maia throwing some surprisingy good, aggressive shots). Put it this way- silva will never engage in any ground battle with a 1 dimensional grappler. If you have nothing to offer him in the striking department- you are a) not going to engage enough for him to ko you and 2) To him it would be the equivelant of fighting a drunk guy on the street- believe me it is very difficult to go for the kill against a guy who's standup skills are amatuer in comparison you. If you can humiliate a fighter, in the old martial arts ways, there is no need to knock him out.

But yeah, poor matchmaking is also a massive factor. Who could seriously offer Silva a competitive fight though? That's obviously what he's craving, and his opponents lack of ability to offer it is what makes him behave like he did last night. When Belfort pulled out, rather than put on an obvious stinker of a matchup against Maia, Dana should have made Silva watch a LHW- so many exciting 3d (as opposed to maia- a 1 dimensional jiu jitsu guy) fighters up there. Having now watched the fight I now don't blame this on maia. maia showed a lot of heart in that last round (although everytime silva attacked he just backed off for 5 rounds- he sort of acknowledged his inferiority- not even an attemot at a counter attack (although i would have done the same)) Silva was just messing around because it was so laughably easy for him. There is no honour in destroying somebody who is leagues behind you- you need some adrenaline to really fight, but he probably has had tougher sparring sessions with his students.
I think also that he thought maia disrespected him by getting in his face during the mui thai bowing ceremony (unwittingly on maia's behalf). Silva just wanted to humiliate him after that.

I think Joe Rogan and Mark Goldberg were dead on. Anderson Silva quit. He outclassed Maia for about three rounds and then he just stopped, whether he was tired,or bored, or whatever I dont know. But he quit. He showed the skills to finish Maia in the begining but chose not to for whatever reason. All in all I think this fight and UFC 112 was BORING, really really BORING. That goes for the Hughes vs Gracie and Penn vs. Edgar fights too.

He has the most utter disdain for many of these types of American fighters that come in the ring against him, and that represents NO other formally trained Martial Arts lineage other than some make shift training camp that they come from. Hang on just a minute, i agree with you that SIlva is not just another meathead in MMA but come on the only time he showed Maia any respect in that fight was in the first minute of the fight and that was because he didn't know what to expect after that he showed a huge lack of respect to his opponent. and as for the comment as to him being a poster boy for "TRUE" martial arts (and i use that the word true very loosely) i have been studying martial arts for a number of years and i have respect and diginity for my opponents but that is not what Silva showed in that fight all i saw from this fight is that SIlva has not worked hard enough on his conditioning a great MMA fighter needs to be able to keep up the performance that he showed in the first 2 rounds for the whole fight and due to a lack of conditioning Silva could not do that.

As for the showboating being a opportunity for his opponents to recover that is a load of crap. Everyone knows if your opponent is stunned then you take advantage of this weakness and even if he was doing it to give a better fight why did he just give up on all the showboating and do nothing but back off and run in circles for two and a half rounds which ruined a great fight if Maia wasn't up to the task why did he not save him the embarassment .

I am a great fan of Anderson Silva but this performance was as usual great for 2 rounds but then his lack of conditioning became an issue again if Silva wants to go down in history as the greatest MMA fighter of all time he needs to get a new conditiong coach and sort it out.

White has harsh words for Silva post fight in the locker (threatening him to cut him from the UFC).

Silva apologizes at the post conference fight and promises that Silva will fight and deliver his "ballet of violence" he is known for.

In the end, Silva has a huge ego and doesn't like to be a simply marketing tool. I expect him to leave the UFC or MMA altogether after he wins his last relevant fights.
